The Jerseys Boys

Papa Ted (David’s father) has a love for Jersey Boys, the UK smash hit musical that has been running for two years at The Prince Edward Theatre, in fact he’s seen it live six times now so I wasn’t surprised when he bought tickets for the five of us to go. I was impressed though that he had paid for us to have a private suite with our own host, drinks and hors d’oeuvres, signed programmes by the whole cast and backstage treatment!

I was in two minds about Jersey Boys as I didn’t really know much about the Four Seasons or Frankie Valli but was surprised to realise I knew most of the songs and one of my favourites “Oh What a Night” happened to be the first song I danced to do circa 1989 when my nightclubbing days began (just for the record, they have ended since)! I braced myself for a little of the colourful language I was advised of however luckily went straight over the kids heads but to my surprise, when the intermission started and we were being escorted to our private suite, an elderly Nun in full habit approached me and asked “Are you taking the children home”? Confused by the question, I simply answered “No”. The elderly Nun then looked at me seriously and said “Oh My God”! Still confused, I walked with Papa Ted outside to only find the Nun at the front door advising the staff how disgusting she thought the language was and that there were children present and they should be ashamed!
I must admit, I had to have a bit of a giggle, the language really wasn’t that bad, I mean we are talking Jersey in the sixties and they were Italians – blaspheming was a requirement!

By the end of the show I was in love, with the cast, the atmosphere and especially the music. How many songs do you know?
P.S. Quietly thinking I could go back to London and see it one more time!
